5 (+5) Movies with the Best Costumes

FIVE_WITH-GiuliaTorelli

Did you ever noticed that it is much easier to write a negative review than a positive one? To criticize is much more creative, you search for puns, you use irony. So how to present someone you really like without sounding cheesy? But Giulia is a smart, beautiful nice and funny girl, these are the true adjectives that come into my mind when I think of her. And her blog Rock and Fiocc (mostly written in Italian but here is the English version) is one of my favourites: it is a blog that really inspires, teaches you something new and makes you laugh. Just as her. A person that I’m proud and happy to know. Her blog is focused on fashion but she also posts about music, videos, travel. And movies. So I asked Giulia to name her 5 favourite movies with the best costumes and clothing. She named 5 vintage and 5 modern movies. Enjoy! I really did.

1 | LES PARAPLUIES DE CHERBOURG (1964)

With an adorable Catherine Deneuve wearing pastel dresses and cardis, a bow in her hair and flat shoes.

2 | WHAT A  WAY TO GO  (1964)

A black comedy from 1964 with costumes designed by Edith Head, who received an Oscar nomination for costumes that year. Shirley MacLaine changes lots of husbands and each time she gets a new one her look changes as well. She also goes through a pink moment where she even has pink hair.

3 | HOW TO STEAL A MILLION DOLLAR (1966)

Audrey Hepburn’s most well-known movie for looks is no doubt “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” of course, but this movie is also worth. Her clothes are Givenchy and she wears big white sunglasses. The same that Kurt Cobain wore in some of his most iconic photos.

4| LA PISCINE (1969)

Movie from 1969 with Romy Schneider and Jane Birkin.Who have opposite looks, more ladylike versus trendy for the moment: shorts, litlle dresses an big sunglasses. The movie is also worth for a beautiful Alain Delon starring on it.

5 | SWING TIME  (1936)

On her movies with Fred Astaire Ginger Rogers was always very elegant. The costume designer in Swing Time was Bernard Newman, head designer of Bergdorf Goodman in New York.

BONUS | DESIGNING WOMAN (1957)

Lauren Bacall is is perfectly dressed in all of her movies but in this one she plays a designer so she is beyond perfect. Clothes were designed by Helen Rose, designer at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Lauren changes 30 looks in the movie. Helen said: “Designing Woman was a designer’s dream come true. Lauren Bacall has a perfect figure for clothes and a genuine feeling for them”. ”

On to the modern movies: Giulia chose titles where actors wear a sort of “uniform” that became as famous as the movie.

1 | WILD AT HEART (1990)

In this movie Nicolas Cage is always dressed in total black, boots and a python blazer. While Laura Dern wears super stretchy dresses, lace bodies over tights, red shoes and messy hair. Two real rebels.

2 | CLUELESS (1995)

A Nineties movie that showed the life of rich and popular girls living in Beverly Hills. Cher Horowitz, the protagonist, wears suits with short skirts, Calvin Klein dresses and Nineties wedges. She has a computer in her closet that creates the best outfits for her. A movie and closet that every ’90’s Girl raved of and that is still pupular today (see recent Iggy Azalea, “Fancy” video). A well known conversation between Cher and her father was: ‘Cher, what the hell is that?’  ‘A dress!’  ‘Says who?” ‘Calvin Klein!’ ”

3 | GIRL INTERRUPTED (1999)

Two protagonists, two different styles. Winona Ryder, the good girl, wearing loafers, black ankle trousers and striped tops. And Angelina Jolie, the bad girl, wearing crumpled T-shirts, low rise trousers and bad cut hair.

4 | GHOST WORLD (2001)

A comedy made from a graphic novel by Daniel Clowes. The two protagonists are disillusioned and cynical girls and so are their clothing. Slogan Tees, biker jackets, mini skirts and boots, green hair: two perfect outsiders.

5 | THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS – I TENENBAUMS (2001)

Wes Anderson is known for creating uniforms for his characters. Here we have an unforgetable Ben Stiller wearing a red adidas gym suit, the same as his two sons. And of course Gwyneth Paltrow, as Margot Tenenbaum, always dressed in striped Lacoste mini-dresses, loafers, a Fendi fur and a clip in her hair.
