Maybe it’s not all your fault
“Self-improvement culture charges that if we change ourselves we can change our circumstances. It acknowledges there are problems but makes a bid to solve these problems through the individual. The individual must take responsibility for the problem and work actively to change it independently for others. In fact, self-help often encourages individuals not to expect the support or cooperation of others. […] The advice helps us make a place for ourselves in such society. It helps us feel comfortable in a world that has only the comfort of the few in mind, and even they must not be satisfied with their lot.”
