6 Things I learned in my 6 Years as a Blogger

today is your sixth anniversary!
 The sixth one?! I could start by saying it’s been a long time, how things changed in the blogosphere, how many fashion bloggers appeared and disappeared (hey, only from the web!) over these years. Actually I’ll tell you what I feel I’ve
learned in these 6 years as a blogger.
ONE | You change, it changes.
The cool thing of
having a blog is that it mirrors – or at least it should mirror – yourself. That “yourself” that changes over time: it
evolves, matures and alters its own attitudes. And if you look back in horror at your old posts, like you do at high school haircuts and outfits photos, your blog
will always be a sort of map showing the evolution of your tastes. But also
of your skills and improvements.
TWO | Yes, it’s a job.
Having a blog itself doesn’t mean
anything, starting a blog doesn’t make you a blogger. Managing it for 6 years with daily posts maybe does. And,
as for any other profession, no matter how weird it can be
considered, the following rule applies: if a company gives you a a fee for service (and you pay taxes on it), well it’s a job. The quality level of some of these jobs would be worth a
separate discussion but I won’t dig into bloggers-haters issues.
Anyway, if you’re
able to create a pretty good web community and keep it overtime, you may well have a job. Or a lot of free stuff. The difference is crucial.
THREE | If you want something done, do
it yourself. Or maybe not.
During these six these years I’ve run
the blog on my own, like a one-woman-blog. I used to smile over other bloggers who told their readers they had a “team”. “Why do they need a team?”, I thought. But I
was wrong. Nowadays if you want to publish high quality content you can’t
do it all on your own. After all, number two team-member of every
respectable fashion blog has always been… the blogger’s boyfriend taking outfit photos! But new energies and fresh minds are useful also
in other aspects of a blog. News on this side soon.
FOUR | Keep your passion alive
The relationship
with your blog is like a love story. At the beginning you start
with butterflies in your stomach and you’re full of enthusiasm. But how to keep the passion alive over six years? It’s not easy. It’s like marriage. There are moments
you try to remember the feeling you had when you started dating while what you actually feel is a lot of frustration.
And other moments where you wonder if “the blog has taken a
little blue pill” since everything seems to be plain sailing.
Anyway, like for every relationship, you need patience. Oh, my dear blog,
how much patience.
FIVE | Is fashion still in fashion?
Speaking of it: after 6
years of tips and fashion collages, I’m starting to feel a bit uncomfortable in this total look. Should I talk only of fashion while fashion bloggers are now considered the ones who (only) post outfits? I feel I need to explore new ways. More often than ever. All in
all, I’ve never been a standard fashion blogger.
SIX | It’s not the end (of blogs)
Years ago video
killed the radio star. Today I feel like Instagram is the new Terminator. “Thanks”
to the Instagram boom, we almost no longer read or comment blogs anymore, we just scroll through photos for that half a second it takes to decide
whether to put a heart or not. Maybe it’s not like that. I hope it isn’t, at
least. Do you still love reading posts? Do you still read any blogs?
And by reading I mean those blogs which write something
different from “I’ve created this romantic-rock-chic-casual outfit for my granny’s party”. Or
you just don’t have time because there are undoubtedly TOO
MANY blogs? I really hope the answer is still “yes I read them”. Even if your time, I
know, is precious. I decided to go against the flow by
choosing to boost the written part. Words vs. pictures.
 I still care about words.

  1. Cara Erica, tocchi un tasto dolente. Per me quest'anno (il 15 aprile) sono stati 5 anni! Eh sì, per quanto pochissimo seguito io abbia, anche per me il blog è stato, per un bel periodo, il mio secondo lavoro. Anch'io, quale one-woman-blog, ho sempre dovuto fare tutto da sola: idee, testi, foto, grafiche, ricerche ecc. E devo dire quando hai un lavoro a tempo pieno che ti succhia tutte le energie, una casa, una famiglia (e tanti mici) di cui prenderti cura, il tempo per fare post rimane davvero poco. E per respirare un po’, su qualcosa dovevo pur tagliare! Ecco il perché dei miei pochi post. Ma io adoro il mondo del web e non posso rinunciarci ancora del tutto! Anch’io sto pensando a dei cambiamenti, soprattutto perché LE COSE SONO DAVVERO CAMBIATE… Quando abbiamo cominciato “noi”, i blog nascevano per raccontare qualcosa, per condividere idee, i fashion blog dovevano essere quelli che mostravano outfit semplici, portabili tutti i giorni e alla portata di tutti perché in realtà la vita vera non era nel web! E tutti eravamo stufi del modus operandi delle riviste patinate, perciò al via foto semplici, di ragazze spontanee. Ma oggi no, oggi c’è la gara al blog più figo, a chi ha più contatti con le aziende, a chi ha più followers perché se no, non sei blogger e sei un perdente; c’è poi la gara a chi è più figa, con tanto di ritocchi chirurgici estetici per esserlo, a chi ha indossa i capi più di tendenza e non poco costosi! E poi ci sono i “vips” che entrano anche loro in questo mondo, che una volta era NOSTRO, della gente comune, e tu come puoi competere? Se non hai un team (un’agenzia!!!) come sopravvivi? Devi fare le foto fighe, da RIVISTA, devi fare post quotidiani, devi socializzare su Facebook (account personale e pagina), Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, Periscope, ecc., devi essere invitata agli eventi, perché se non viaggi e se non vai alle cene e alle feste chic, che sfigata sei??
    Tutto questo è un mondo effettivamente invidiabile per chi lo vive, ma poi mi chiedo, quanta falsità ed ipocrisia ci sia sotto tutto questo e mi interessa davvero farne parte e sprecare tutte le mie energie? Il web è diventato il “mondo dello spettacolo 2” e questo mi rattrista molto.
    Scusa se mi sono dilungata ma ultimamente pensavo da tempo di scrivere un post così, per far sapere cosa ne penso alle poche persone che mi leggono — poche ma buone, no? 😉 — e con l’occasione di dico sì, è vero, ci sono troppi blog e pure troppi blog famosi al quale star dietro, leggere, commentare, e perciò ci si sofferma alle foto. Scorri, guardi, un cuore e via.
    Un bacione grande, il tuo resta uno dei blog preferiti :)

    • Lela grazie di questo bel messaggio! Ci troviamo d'accordo su molte cose. Dovresti pubblicarlo questo post sul tuo blog. Anch'io vorrei scrivere prima o poi di come i fashion blog abbiano perso il loro potere di ispirazione. Io sono d'accordo con le collaborazioni, le faccio anch'io, ma una volta ogni tanto ce la facciamo a fare un outfit PERSONALE, che so uno su 10 non sponsorizzato? Ciò conservare un minimo di genuinità. Non parliamo poi dei fashion blog dei "vip"…

  3. Ciao Erica, ne parlavo giusto qualche tempo fa con una SMM e amica. Il mio blog ha solo 2 anni ed è imparagonabile al tuo per tipo di contenuti e di competitors, eppure spesso mi sono trovata a fare una riflessione simile alla tua. Esiste una pletora di autori di non-contenuti (giornalisti, scrittori, vip, youtubers, bloggers, gente comune, spesso dementi totali) che dal mio punto di vista non sono "concorrenti" reali ma comunque costituiscono un rumore di fondo che disturba, e distrae. Per indole, li ignorerei perché non li seguo e non li considero delle alternative interessanti, ma poi mi frustro e andrei a casa a staccargli il modem. Praticamente mi indigno come se avessi un blog dal 2002 e l'Internet l'avessi fondato io…

  4. Si, continua così!!! Io leggo con molto piacere il tuo ed altri pochi blog, che secondo me sono veramente degni di nota e ricchi di personalità! Immagino non sia sempre semplice, ma tanto nessun lavoro lo è mai!!! La tua freschezza comunque mi piace e sapessi quanti spunti ho avuto grazie ai tuoi collage, che racchiudono il meglio dei vari blog in circolazione!!! E auguri per questo bel traguardo. :)

  9. Ciao, mi chiamo Monica e anche se non ho mai commentato il tuo blog (nè quello di altri) è sulla mia lista dei preferiti da molti anni. Penso che dovresti scrivere sì ma non troppo, pur non amando il nuovo Instagram blog trovo che anche i blog troppo verbosi stanchino e siano di difficile lettura. Io amo molto quelli francesi, ancora tradizionali ma deliziosi, loro continuano a scrivere della loro vita, delle loro scelte senza esagerare con paginoni troppo pieni. Comunque il tuo si è sempre distinto dagli altri per originalità e buongusto. Non mollare.

      E hai perfettamente ragione, i testi troppo lunghi stancano, anch'io tendo a non leggerli se sono troppo lunghi. Cercherò di mantenermi su una lugnhezza accettabile e non noiosa :) Grazie!

    • io trovo che la scrittura e la lunghezza non siano dei difetti, ma devono ovviamente essere fatti bene, sono valori aggiunti proprio perché oggi sul web tutto si esaurisce nelle didascalie di Instagram o nei post di Facebook, io francamente lo trovo riduttivo nel senso che non mi piacciono “gli esibizionisti” cioè quelli che scrivono in modo pomposo quasi a sottolineare la propria cultura per far sentire gli altri ignoranti, ma d’altro canto, da persona abituata e leggere, studiare cose ben più lunghe di un post, trovo poco stimolanti quegli articoli fatti di nulla e troppo sbrigativi, se vado di fretta mi scorro le foto di instagram, se voglio mettermi comoda a leggere non mi fermo di fronte a tante righe
      questo discorso è importante, perchè questa mania nel considerare il web un luogo dove si legge e scrive poco ha contribuito ad aumentare l’ignoranza, la banalità che si respirano in molti blog e affini
