This is a fashion blog. It covers frivilous issues. 😀 But this time the brand SAWA gave me the opportunity to write about fashion but also about economic impact and social chage. “SAWA sneakers are born from the energy of African cobblers who, together with us, are challenging the traditional North-South industrial flow (raw materials from Africa transformed elsewhere into finished goods). SAWA sneakers are made in Africa with materials from Africa. SAWA is more than a brand. it is a project whose ambition is to set the foundations of a sustainable economy, thanks to a pruduct enriched in value from local genuine knowhow”, that’s how SAWA presents itself. His goal? No charity actions but to build a real and autonomous local economy instead. Entirely made in Africa: materials and manifacturing. SAWA sneakers have a vintage inspiration. Do you know why? Because every day thousands of containers full of old second hand clothes arrive in Africa form the “developed” countries. And they strongly influence the local fashion and the people’s taste. I never thought about this before and I appreciate that SAWA informed me about that. SAWA makes things go the opposite way: African products that conquer the “Western” markets. And if you were doubting about Africa + Sneakers = cheap quality product?. Than let me say you that SAWA sneakers are distributed in some of the most prestigious stores in the world like Dover Street Market in London, Black Block in Paris, Wood Wood in Berlin and Comme de Garçon in Tokyo (an online store will also open soon). SAWA sneakers are sold among other African products like soaps, matchboxes and notebooks that make little corners recreating the atmosphere of their country.

Grazie al brand SAWA questa volta ho l’occasione di parlare di fashion ma anche di impatto economico e di cambiamenti sociali. “Le scarpe SAWA sono nate dall’energia e dal buon umore degli artigiani africani, che, assieme a noi, hanno fatto una scommessa: andare contro il flusso industriale tradizionale Nord-Sud che vede le materie prime ricavate in Africa e poi trasformate altrove in beni finiti. Le scarpe SAWA sono prodotte in Camerun, utilizzando esclusivamente materiali africani” così si presenta il progetto Sawa. Il suo obiettivo? Nessuna azione di beneficienza ma l’importanza di gettare le basi per un’economia autonoma, locale, sostenibile e duratura creando un prodotto interamente made in Africa: dai materiali, all’abilità manifatturiera.

Le scarpe SAWA hanno un design ispirato alle sneakers vintage. Sapete perchè? Perché ogni giorno in Africa arrivano containers pieni di vestiti e accessori di seconda mano inviati dai paesi “sviluppati”. E questo tipo di mercato finisce per influenzare notevolmente il gusto locale in fatto di abbigliamento. Non avevo mai considerato questo tipo di conseguenze perciò apprezzo che il progetto SAWA mi ci abbia fatto riflettere. Le sneakers SAWA quindi intraprendono il cammino inverso: partire dall’Africa per conquistare il gusto e i mercati “occidentali”.
